- Survey
of Machine Translation products and services, is an excellent
survey carried out by Equipe Consortium Ltd on behalf of the European
Commission.
- Alta
Vista and SYSTRAN
have teamed up to provide free (albeit mediocre) translations over the
Internet.
- Some sobering history: Machine
Translation: The Disappointing Past and Present, by Martin Kay
(Xerox PARC).
- Machine
Translation: Using interlinguas to map between languages, by
Matt Jones, in Wired, 4(10), October 1996.
- The seminal work in statistical MT is an article written by the
IBM MT group: A statistical approach to machine translation, by
P. Brown, J. Cocke, S. Della Pietra, V. Della Pietra, F. Jelinek,
J. Lafferty, R. Mercer, and P. Roosin, in Computational
Linguistics, 16(2), June 1990. Alas, it does not appear to be
available electronically...
- Christian Boitet (Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble)
has written a nice introduction to the ways machines and people can
cooperate during translation: (Human-Aided)
Machine Translation: A Better Future? and Machine-aided
Human Translation.
